2019 became a breeding ground of controversy for all corners of the world. Whether it is sports, politics, business, environment, or even fashion and movie industry, controversy left its footprints pretty much everywhere. However, some of them specifically managed to steal the limelight and fell under the scrutinizing eyes of the world.
As the decade comes to an end, let us do a quick rewind of some of the top-5 controversies that the world experienced in 2019:
1. The Highly Controversial Citizenship Amendment Act/CAA Of 2019.
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed by the Parliament of India on December 11, 2019, and immediately took the whole country by storm.
According to the Act, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, Christian, and Jain can get themselves a ticket for Indian citizenship. However, it raised a red flag for the Muslims of the country.
This was the first time in the entire history of Indian law that religion was so blatantly and overtly used as a criterion for citizenship. The act inevitably triggered protests from the entire country, as well as from the world itself.
After the bill was cleared on the 4th of December, 2019, it invited violent protests from Assam, particularly Guwahati. Whereas Internet access was restricted in many parts of the country.
As the country raged in anger and violence, there were many rallies in supports too. Students groups, such as the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, expressed their support for the CAA.
Many Hindu refugee families living in Assam also said that the act has kindled hope in their hearts.
Nevertheless, it apparently became a highly controversial issue for the country.
2. The Huawei Ban & The Controversy That Followed.
Mr. John McCallum, who was appointed Canada’s ambassador to China in 2017, caused much controversy when he got into a public argument by saying that the US extradition request for Ms. Meng Wanzhou was flawed.
However, the very next day he rectified himself by saying that he “misspoke” and regretted that his comments led to “confusions”.
Meng Wanzhou, a senior executive from the Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, was arrested on the 1st of December in Canada’s western city of Vancouver. The detention, at the request of the US, caused a souring relationship between Canada and Beijing.
Mr. Justin Trudeau, the honorable prime minister of Canada, asked McCallum to step down, however, he refrained from stating his reasons. This 2019 controversy caught much attention.
3. The Overthrow Controversy In The World Cup Final, 2019.
Much controversy followed when England was awarded six runs for the overthrow in the final over of its chase against New Zealand in the final match of the World Cup, 2019.
Rampant questions were raised, doubting whether England only deserved 5 instead of 6 runs, as per International Cricket Council rules.
In the highly tense final over, England was chasing 242. However, the match ended as a tie and a Super Over was played. Surprisingly, the Super Over also ended in a tie and England was crowned as the World Champions as they had scored more boundaries during the final.
Legendary umpire Simon Taufel stated that the on-field umpire’s decision is simply an “error in judgment”.
Sports and controversy have gone hand-in-hand for a long time. This was just another addition!
4. The Amazon Wildfires Was Probably The Worst-Case Scenario.
In August 2019, the world witnessed the brutal burning of Earth’s lungs. The Amazon rainforest in Brazil saw an alarming number of wildfires this year, which is pretty concerning. Alberto Setzer, a senior scientist at Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research, stated that about 99% of the wildfires have been started by humans.
This year, scientists have recorded more than 74,000 fires in Brazil! Deforestation happens to be one of the main reasons behind this catastrophe, as was also recorded by The Guardian.
If the disastrous process continues, it will ultimately reach its tipping point and substantially contribute to the increase of global temperature.
In February 2019, Facebook changed its Terms of Services which allowed them to retain and use any content or information posted on the user’s account, claiming ownership of it, much after even the account is deleted.
Apparently, this caused a stir among the majority of its users. It also led to the formation of groups on the site for the ToS to be reverted back.
Facebook, however, went on to defend itself by saying that they never intended the change to be so far-reaching and that the entire thing has been misinterpreted. In the end, Facebook had to change the ToS to the original version.
